Drivers in Ontario using winter tires on their vehicles could see an insurance discount starting in January, according to the Ministry of Finance.
The Ontario government is moving forward on a plan, first proposed in April, that would require private insurers to offer discounts to people who buy and install winter tires on their vehicles starting Jan. 1, 2016.
“Our government is committed to reducing insurance costs and lowering premiums after recently introducing important and necessary reforms to the auto insurance system. Auto insurance is dependent on individual drivers’ behavior, and this winter season, drivers across Ontario will be able to save more on their auto insurance by installing winter tires,” said Charles Sousa, Minister of Finance in a release.
A government press release about the program said winter tires can “enhance safety and reduce the likelihood of collisions by improving traction, braking and handling in frost, snow, slush and under cold and icy conditions.”
When purchasing winter tires the providence is also reminding buyers to look for tires marked with the three peak mountain snowflake symbol, to replace all four tires at once, change tires that are worn, and check tire pressure monthly.
