Lubricating oil from Titan Tire Corp.’s Bryan, Ohio tire facility spilled into a nearby creek on Jan. 3, 2015, injuring approximately 400 waterfowl, according to The Toledo Blade. According to the company, the release has been contained and the company is actively addressing the incident.
Titan hired Tri-State Bird Rescue & Research Inc. to oversee bird-recovery efforts and is keeping the 400 injured waterfowl – mostly mallards – in a pen on the site of the facility, waiting to be decontaminated.
According to The Toledo Blade, an EPA spokesman said an issue with a valve on the above-ground store tank caused the tank to release used lube oil into the creek. While most of the oil was captured, the Ohio EPA believes a large amount escaped due to high water caused by recent heavy rain.
