The state charges a $2.50 fee on each new tire, plus an additional $5 on tires fitted with heavy metal studs.
Many blame studded tires for chewing expensive ruts in the roads.
But Gov. Sarah Palin was all for ditching the tire fees, first imposed in 2003. Her staff told lawmakers the fees didn’t raise as much money as expected about $1.5 million last year and discouraged people from buying new, safer tires.
