Eighty-three percent of Americans indicate they take at least one summer road trip during the summer, according to a survey by Bridgestone Americas.
According to Bridgestone, cost is one of the leading reasons Americans choose to drive rather than fly. Fifty-eight percent of survey participants noted that they also choose road travel over air because it gives them greater flexibility.
On average, U.S. adults are willing to drive more than 500 miles on a summer road trip. When asked what could ruin a summer road trip, 74% of Americans were concerned about a fender bender and 49% said that getting a flat tire was a concern.
Bridgestone also found that 81% of those who take summer road trips perform vehicle maintenance to ensure their vehicles are ready. According to those surveyed who perform vehicle maintenance before hitting the road this summer:
- 84% will check tire pressures
- 82% will check fluid levels
- 60% will change the oil
Bridgestone’s survey was conducted online within the U.S. by Harris Poll on behalf of the tiremaker from May 2-6, 2014 among 2,049 adults ages 18 and older.
