Doublestar to Pay Toyo $1.6 Million in Contempt Sanctions

Doublestar Dong Feng Tyre Co Ltd and its affiliate Qingdao Doublestar Tire Industrial Co Ltd, have been ordered by a federal court in California to pay $1.6 million to Toyo Tire & Rubber Co. Ltd. for violating a 2014 court order, which barred Doublestar from selling tires that are “confusingly similar” to Toyo’s products.

According to Law360, Doublestar Dong Feng Tyre Co Ltd and its affiliate Qingdao Doublestar Tire Industrial Co Ltd, have been ordered by a federal court in California to pay $1.6 million to Toyo Tire & Rubber Co Ltd for violating a 2014 court order, which barred Doublestar from selling tires that are “confusingly similar” to Toyo’s product.

Toyo alleged that Doublestar had continued to manufacture and sell the infringing tires for more than two years, despite the previous judgment, and was seeking more than seven times the judgment ultimately handed down by the court. Toyo had asked for $3 million in lost profits and $2.7 million, triple that number for lost market share, and an additional $2.7 million in reputational injury and litigation expenses.
