The Pirelli/Schrader sensor would work with passenger and commercial tires, according to Pirelli, and would be capable of providing real-time inflation pressure and temperature readings.
The “miniaturized sensor system” would require no batteries, said Pirelli, as it would generate its own power. Pirelli said it and Schrader already hold five international patents combined for the system.
Developed initially for OE applications, the sensor, said Pirelli, could store tire size and type data, and other information such as “tire temperature and pressure and the eventual residual flat running distance,” data that can be related to the driver in real time.
“The new sensor allows the tire to interact with the car, enabling the parameters of the on-board electronic systems to adapt to the information received, therefore enhancing safety and performance,” said Pirelli.
