Nokian Launches New WR Winter Tire Line

Nokian Tyres has introduced a new winter tire line the company said offers a "combination of safety and carefree driving pleasure."
The Nokian WR A3
The tires, Nokian WR D3 and Nokian WR A3, are designed for different vehicles and drivers but for any winter weather. Both environmentally-friendly premium products feature nanotechnology and canola oil, the tiremaker said.

“We utilized our top expertise and knowledge of all types of winter conditions. Thanks to nanotechnology, new materials and innovations, as well as our modern production technology, we are able to provide drivers with tires that have first-class grip and handling properties,” said Teppo Huovila, Nokian vice president of research and development.

The WR D3, for medium-sized and small passenger cars, is designed for economic drivers who value safety, Nokian said. The tire features an arrow-shaped, directional tread pattern with new solutions to actively prevent slush planing.

The WR A3, tuned for sensitive driving response even at higher speeds, is for larger and more powerful vehicles. The tire features an asymmetrical tread pattern that enables reliable grip without compromising high-speed driving properties. The inner shoulder design enhances the removal of water and slush. The WR A3 also offers new Silent Groove Design – semi-round cavities on the sides of the tire’s longitudinal ribs, resembling a golf ball pattern – that provides sharper response, higher mileage and minimized noise, Nokian said.

Both tires’ tread compound, “Cryogenic Canola Compound,” combines natural rubber, silica and canola oil to optimize winter grip, wet grip and wear resistance in varying temperatures, according to the tiremaker. Canola oil provides higher resistance to tear and improves ice and snow grip, while the high silica content offers low rolling resistance, lower fuel consumption and fewer harmful emissions than traditional competitors.

Nokian WR tires are available in a range of 13- to 20-inch sizes, with speed ratings ranging from T to W. Aimed particularly at the Central European markets, the tires will be available for retail in fall of this year.
