The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) has proposed a new rule that would require manufacturers to notify consumers of outstanding recalls by electronic means in addition to first-class mail.
“Through this proposed rule, NHTSA also seeks to improve the efficacy of recalls by requiring manufacturers to send additional notifications of defects or noncompliance with applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) if a second notification by the manufacturer does not result in an adequate number of motor vehicles or replacement equipment being returned for remedy,” NHTSA said.
According to the NHTSA, the proposed rule allows for electronic notification in a variety of ways including, ‘‘electronic mail, text messages, radio or television notifications, vehicle infotainment console messages, over the-air alerts, social media or targeted online campaigns, phone calls, including automated phone calls, or other real time means.’’
NHTSA is currently requesting public comment on the proposed rule as a whole through Oct. 31, 2016. For more information on submitting comments and to submit a comment, click here.
