Monro will “exit the 29 remaining Monro Muffler Brake and Service stores located in BJ’s Wholesale Club locations,” according to John Van Heel, Monro CEO. Van Heel spoke during the company’s Q2 2015 earnings call report on Oct. 23.
The tire retailer reported that it opened its first Monro in BJ’s in 1999 to fill in selected markets. Van Heel noted that, as Monro does not sell the tires in these locations, opportunities were limited.
“With our continued growth, these locations are not strategic for Monro,” said Van Heel. “Due to our high store density in key markets, a significant portion of these sales will transfer to other Monro locations where we will be able to leverage existing fixed costs.”
During the company’s earnings call report, Van Heel did note that BJ’s will continue to offer certain tire services. “From what I understand, [BJ’s] will run their tire base for tires,” said Van Heel.
Monro also announced that it will expand into Georgia with the acquisition of Atlanta-based Wood & Fullerton Inc.
