Officials are investigating an incident in which a construction worker suffered serious injuries at the Kumho Tire USA Inc. plant in Macon, Ga., on Thursday, local media reports.
Kumho has met with the Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration as the agency investigates what caused the 19-year-old construction worker to fall from a walkway attached to the ceiling.
Kumho’s human resources director for Georgia Jim Frentheway said the construction worker’s safety harness was not attached when the accident occurred.
The Macon plant is Kumho’s first North American manufacturing plant and has been under construction since 2008. When production starts in early 2016, the plant is expected to produce 4 million tires a year with an automated system that builds a tire every 36 seconds.
