Cooper Names Whirlpool Exec as New President & CEO

(Akron/Tire Review) Whirlpool Corp. senior vice president Roy Armes has been named the new president and CEO of Cooper Tire & Rubber Co.

Armes replaces interim CEO Bryan Pond, who has been in that post since Tom Dattilo resigned as chairman, president and CEO in August.

Armes, who will take over at Cooper effective Jan. 1, 2007, has been with Whirlpool for 31 years. He was also elected to Cooper’s board of directors.

Cooper did not name a new chairman of the board; instead, the company will continue with an “office of the chairman” comprised of Pond and board members John Shuey and Art Aronson.

“We are extremely pleased to have Roy taking the lead at Cooper at this critical time,” Pond said. “He has all the qualities we were searching for and the leadership capabilities to continue and successfully execute the company’s plans for profitability. He has the complete confidence of the board and will fit in well with our management team.”

Armes holds a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Toledo. During his career at Whirlpool, Armes held a number of senior posts in engineering, project management and purchasing, and had international posts in Mexico and China.
