Millennials Outnumber Gen Xers, Baby Boomers in the Workforce

Millennials-Workforce-WorkersMillennials surpassed Generation X to become the largest share of the American workforce this year, according to new Pew Research Center analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data. Last year, the Millennial labor force surpassed that of the Baby Boomers, which has declined as Boomers retire, Pew reported.

According to Pew’s research, more than one-in-three American workers today are Millennials, which is defined as adults ages 18 to 34 in 2015). Pew estimates that 53.5 million Millennials make up the U.S.’s workforce.

This trend is not expected to slow, either.

Pew reported that “with its disproportionately large share of immigrants, and at an age of transition from college to the working world, the Millennial generation’s workforce is highly likely to grow even further in the near future.”

The research firm also noted that the Millennial population as a whole – not just its workforce – is projected to surpass that of Baby Boomer this year as the “nation’s largest living generation,” according to Census Bureau.
