The rule is intended to make F1 racing more interesting by forcing the teams to deal with race conditions depending on which rubber they were running on at the different stages. Spectators would be able to visually identify the different tyres as the softer tyres would be marked with a red sidewall.
Despite Bridgestone’s persistent efforts, neither the FIA or the F1 teams have yet agreed upon this rule. Bridgestone technical manager Hisao Suganuma says they are supporting the red tyre rule as “it is a big matter for us if it makes F1 more interesting."
