Addressing the Tyre Recovery Association Forum in Solihull, Birmingham, recently, Naylor warned that fly tipping had increased dramatically, indicating that tire dumping on retailers’ sites was also rising.
Some 33% of National Tyre Distributors Association members report that tire dumping at their locations had increased, with large “fast-fit” retail chains reporting 10% to 15% more tires on their premises than they remove from vehicles.
In his speech, Naylor suggested that organized crime was involved in the illegal dumping. “It is potentially very lucrative for these gangs and is seen by many as a victimless crime,” he said. “And yet there is a cost to remove and responsibly dispose of these tyres and that cost ultimately has to be passed onto customers.” (Tire Review/Akron)
