William Halpin, owner of Wisconsin-based Halpin Tire Service, has died. He was 84.

Halpin, a longtime Prairie du Chien resident and tire dealer, passed away in Sun City West, Arizona on Feb. 26. His shop celebrated its 60th anniversary last year.

Halpin did a stint in the national guard, and one of his first jobs was to work seven days a week in a cheese factory. His first car was a 1940 Studebaker Champion.

In 1954, he married Marietta O’Neal, and the couple opened a tire shop together in 1957 in Elkader, Iowa. After a tornado destroyed his Iowa shop, Halpin moved his family back to Wisconsin and rented a former grocery store to open Halpin Tire Service. The business is still in the same building today. Halpin was President of Halpin Tire Service from 1958-1999.

Halpin was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Catholic Family Movement. He collected stamps throughout his lifetime. When he retired, he spent time researching genealogy for the O’Neill and Halpin families. He also enjoyed technology and was a member of the Sun City West computer club.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that friends of Halpin donate to a charity of their choice.
