The Ohio Senate’s Transportation, Commerce and Labor Committee held a second hearing on Senate Bill (SB) 37, which would extend the jurisdiction of the Motor Vehicle Repair Board (MVRB) to include mechanical repairers.

Currently, only collision repair facilities in Ohio are required to register with the MVRB. The current law creates a loophole that allows “backyard” shops to avoid compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) laws and Ohio’s environmental standards, according to the Automotive Service Association (ASA), which strongly supports S.B. 37. These “backyard” shops use this loophole to avoid paying taxes or workers’ benefits, ASA adds.

S.B. 37 would adhere all automotive repair professionals to a uniform set of service and safety standards.
