LIVE AT SEMA: Pirelli Plans to Make Some Noise

Pirelli Tire North America has big plans for this year’s SEMA Show, with launches of key new “green” tires.

Set to be launched at the show are the Scorpion Verde All Season and the P Zero Trofeo.

Designed for SUVs, crossovers and light trucks, the Scorpion Verde All Season delivers improved performance in wet braking, dry handling, wet handling, snow traction and reduces aquaplaning, Pirelli claims, and with decreased rolling resistance and an 8% reduction in weight, it lowers CO2 emissions.
P Zero Trofeo is a DOT street legal race tire with a wider contact patch, and a stiffer sidewall for greater rigidity and stability during acceleration and braking.

Getting size expansions are P Zero Nero (315/25R23 102Y XL), P Zero – Run Flat (285/35ZR19 (99 Y) and 245/40ZR18 93Y), and Scorpion Ice and Snow (245/55R18 103H and 245/50R19 105V XL).

“Pirelli’s ‘Green Performance’ strategy translates into new products and new production systems with reduced environmental impact and low energy consumption – all while focusing on quality and added safety,” the company said. “Investments in technology and innovation run parallel to ambitious objectives such as pushing the green proportion of our tires from the current 20% to 40% by 2011, as well as offering mobility that joins added safety and performance to environmental sustainability.”

Pirelli said its eco-sustainability strategy resulted in its lowering of water consumption levels 12.7%, energy consumption 9.2%, and both its CO2 and NOx emissions by 8.9% and 14.9% respectively over the last four years.

BKT has announced its membership of the Global Platform for Sustainable Natural Rubber (GPSNR). BKT said it is thus taking a further step in promoting long-term sustainable practices, culminating in a more environmentally conscious and friendly production in line with the principles defined by GPSNR.

Natural rubber production holds several opportunities for improvement in both environmental and social terms, BKT said. The expansion of rubber plantations is likely to influence tropical forests, but by means of sustainable practices, it is possible to protect biodiversity and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Similarly, ensuring dignified working conditions and respecting workers' rights on rubber plantations is central to promoting an ethical and sustainable industry, according to BKT.
