The accident occurred Feb. 23.
Police are looking for the tractor-trailer driver who drove away, and they urge anyone who may have seen the vehicle to call them, said Barbara Matthews, Cocoa police spokeswoman.
The driver must of have known the tires came off, "yet the driver of the tractor-trailer just continued on," Matthews said.
The tractor-trailer was described as a full-sized, 53-foot 18-wheeler that has a white or light-colored trailer, even though the color of the front cab is unknown. A partial description of the tag was provided: white with black lettering. Of the six digits, the middle four may be "_4054_."
One of those injured was airlifted to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne. The other two also were taken by ambulances to a hospital.
The tractor-trailer was westbound, and police think an axle may have come unhinged, allowing the wayward tires to cross a grassy median into eastbound traffic.
The driver may have stopped somewhere for repairs or drivers may have seen the tractor with missing tires, Matthews said.
