Tyre Dealer Faces Negligence Charge Over Explosion Death

(Clacton, U.K./Tyres & Accessories) Auchinlea Tyres boss John Wallace has been charged over the death of a teenage trainee who was killed as he inflated a JCB tyre.

Donald Kelly suffered fatal head injuries when the massive tyre exploded in his face. The 18-year-old was slammed against a wall by the force of the blast at a tyre fitting firm in Cleland, Lanarkshire.

Wallace is due in Hamilton Sheriff Court at the beginning of 2007. It is alleged that his negligence led to the death, Scotland’s Daily Record reported. Wallace has been charged under health and safety rules that force bosses to provide a safe workplace. It is claimed staff were not properly trained, the air hose had no trigger or pressure gauge (meaning workers had to disconnect the hose directly from the compressor). The charges also allege that there was no safety cage. If found guilty, Wallace could face an unlimited fine.
