New Tyre Sensor Offers Increased Safety and Lower Operating Costs

(Clacton, U.K./Tyres & Accessories) A new tyre sensor that can warn drivers of dangerous road conditions or urgently needed tyre maintenance has been developed in Germany.

The Tyresense sensor, developed by the Centre of Advanced European Studies and Research, can detect and monitor tyre performance in real time, providing information on the levels of grip and friction between road and tyre. Drivers can thus be warned to modify their driving behaviour in dangerous conditions or when tyre pressure needs adjusting.

The Centre’s Eckhard Quandt explains that, “One way in which safety would be increased is the detection of the ‘slip position’, when a tyre loses its grip and begins to slide on a road. This means we could warn drivers to slow down under dangerous conditions. In other words, we hope to introduce a powerful new tool for enhancing active vehicle safety,”

An added benefit gained from the sensor is the reduced maintenance costs that would follow on from longer-lasting tyres. Goodyear is reportedly considering utilising the sensor system in its new products.
