Mike and Pam Bach of De Soto, Iowa, were asleep at 12:30 a.m. when the tyres parted company with the truck carrying them on nearby Interstate 80. The escapees then bounced and rolled for nearly 500 feet before crashing their way through the vinyl siding of the Bach’s bedroom wall.
The couple only suffered minor injuries but were understandably stunned to awaken under a pile of burning rubber. Pam Bach told a local news channel that the tyres were still very warm when she woke up, hot enough to activate the room’s smoke detectors.
The De Soto Fire Department attended the incident. The department’s Tim Murray commented, “I’ve been on some different calls but this would have to be one of the weirdest ones I’ve seen.” He added that, "It was a rude awakening. Nobody’s really ready for something like that to come through your bedroom at night when you’re going to bed."
The driver of the truck was not aware of the tyres’ departure and a statewide alert was issued for the vehicle. Mike and Pam Bach are now left with a gaping hole in their wall and a new and unwanted suite of rubber bedroom furniture.
