Specialty Tires of America is celebrating its 100th anniversary.
First started as McCreary Tire & Rubber Co. in Indiana, Penn., in 1915, the tiremaker made some of its first tires for Model T Fords. The company changed its name to Specialty Tires of America in 1992.
In 1996, the tiremaker opened another tire manufacturing facility in Unicoi, Tenn. The two plants build about 800,000 tires a year and annual sales, both domestic and foreign, of $125 million.
Specialty Tires manufactures mostly bias-ply tires, while its Pennsylvania plant began making radial tires in 2006.
In celebration of 100 years in business, the company said about 1,000 people, including the company’s employees and their families, shareholders, customers and vendors, will gather at the Pennsylvania facility for an open house celebration. Another celebration will take place Sept. 19 at the tire manufacturing plant in Tennessee.
