Apollo Vredestein was in Budapest earlier this week to launch two new UHP tires under the Vredestein brand.
The Sportrac 5 is the successor to the Sportrac 3, which won the ADAC 2011 summer tire test. The Sportrac 5 is marketed on its quietness, stability and sportiness, offering excellent handling on both wet and dry surfaces, according to the tiremaker.
Its size range is designed to provide fitments on upper medium cars. In contrast to the Sportrac 3, the Sportrac 5 has an asymmetrical tread pattern instead of directional. The tire also has designer hinge points on its central grooves, giving the flexibility required for a low rolling resistance and a good footprint with an improved surface pressure distribution, the tiremaker said. This in turn helps to promote even wear and handling on dry and wet surfaces.
The Sportrac 5 was developed with Italian design company Giugiaro, like previous Vredestein models, the Ultrac Cento and Ultrac Sessanta. Giugiaro developed the tread and sidewall design of the Sportrac 5, giving the tire shading at the base of all four grooves to emphasize its asymmetry and increasing the tire’s sporty appearance. The side engraving is also sleek, while the shoulder of the Sportrac 5 has the Vredestein logo near the tread wear indicator.
Also unveiled was the Vredestein Ultrac Vorti, which was also co-designed with Giugiaro. The Y-indexed tire excels in terms of grip, handling and braking on both dry and wet surfaces, the tiremaker claimed. The outer walls of the two circumferential grooves have a double angle, one at 45 degrees, to achieve greater lateral block stability and better compensate for the sideways forces around bends, Apollo Vredestein said.
The lateral grooves also have an angle of 10 degrees to achieve even rolling, prevent uneven wear and maintain low sound levels. Special arrowheads in the tread reinforce the tire’s course keeping ability.
The Ultrac Vorti will be available in a range of dedicated front and rear sizes. (Tyres & Accessories)
