The Tire Rack One Lap of America, a nationwide charitable street-legal road race held to raise awareness and funds for charitable causes, is now crossing through the Midwest.
Started more than 29 years ago, this year’s event features more than 80 entrants who will be covering some 3,500 miles during the eight-day competition. Tire Rack is celebrating its 10th year as title sponsor.
The event began May 5 at the company’s test facility in South Bend, Ind., and will return there for a final test on May 12. The race will hit seven tracks across the country, including: Autobahn Country Club in Illinois; the High Plains Raceway in Colorado; the road course and drag strip in Brainerd, Minn.; and Road America in Wisconsin.
At each scheduled race track, entrants are put through a series of timed lap trials including wet and dry skid pad challenges. The competition lasts 24 hours each day and features a selection of the fastest street-legal cars.
Competing teams are raising funds for many charities, including: Make a Wish Foundation, Fisher House, FasterCures, KaleidoLINKS and the National MS Society.
