Strike Leads To Supplier Layoffs

(Akron/Tire Review) Performance Fibers’ plant in Moncure, N.C., has announced layoffs, according to Raleigh’s WRAL TV, due directly to reduced orders caused by the United Steelworkers strike at 12 Goodyear tire plants in North America.

The plant supplied Goodyear with polyester yarns for tires and engineered products.

WRAL said that a small number of Performance Fibers production employees would be affected, but the company offered no specifics. Some employees have volunteered to take vacation or take unemployment benefits during the slowdown. The plant employs some 500 people.

Performance Fibers told the station that it expects to bring the workers back in January.
