Laser Tyre Scanner to be Launched at SEMA

The TAC-Scan, a kind of laser scanner designed to record and predict tyre wear, is being launched at this year’s SEMA show in Las Vegas.

While it is not the first device thatclaims to be able measure tyre wear to minute levels of detail, what sets thisinvention apart is its handheld design and realistic price tag (TAC-Scan willreportedly market at around £1000 in the UK). As a result, the new device islikely to appeal to fleets and high performance tyre dealers who want todemonstrate the effects of tyre wear to customers. TAC-Scan has been developedby Oxfordshire-based company RL Automotive, in association with U.S.-based TireProfiles Inc.

If you’re thinkingthat a machine capable of predicting tyre wear sounds like science fiction, itmay surprise you to learn that some of the most discerning technicians in thetyre business are already using prototypes based on exactly the sametechnology. Company representatives told Tyres & Accessories that thehandheld TAC-Scan has been essential equipment for all Formula One teams overthe last four years and is also used by the leading premium tyre manufacturers. In F1 the TAC-Scan’s unique technology has allowed accurate predictions of tyrewear to within one lap in all conditions.

TAC-Scan designerand Chief Executive of RL Automotive Mark Longden says: “In these times ofspiraling costs for many in the Automotive sector, I am proud that inassociation with Tire Profiles Inc., we are able to offer the market a costcutting, fuel saving device with a proven Formula One track record in accuracyand efficiency.”

In a single scan thelaser captures a full profile of any tyre and an integrated handset displays a2D outline of the tyre to the user. Unique software shows and records thisimage and enables a printed report of the exact state of the scanned tyres’tread and wear, thus improving tyre management and fuel efficiency. Easy to usesoftware has also been developed for a larger fleet model of the TAC-Scan forefficient, accurate management of large commercial fleets and multiple axlevehicles.

The laser-basedTAC-Scan is patented worldwide and takes 600 tread depth readings across theface of a tyre in five seconds. (Tyres & Accessories/Staffordshire, U.K.)
