Michelin Mining Essay Contest Opens

(Akron/Tire Review) Michelin North American is now accepting entries for its third annual Michelin Mining Essay Contest, a program that challenges college undergraduates pursuing a mining-related degree to research and address a topic related to the mining industry.

According to MNA, this year’s topic is: “Discuss the requirements and importance of reclamation, as well as establishing and maintaining environmentally-friendly processes throughout the life of a mining operation without diminishing productivity. What steps can be taken in different geographic regions to return land to usefulness?”

A panel of industry experts will judge the entries, and first place will receive $5,000 and second place will receive $3,000. The 2007 aggregate prize amount has been increased by $2,000 from the past two years.

“The success that this contest has enjoyed through its first two years is truly exciting,” said Bill Van Someren, director of earthmover tire sales and marketing. “We are thrilled with the responses that we have received and encouraged by the level of thought and consideration that the students have given each of the topics.  Michelin is proud of our commitment to helping train the next generation of mining professionals.”

To be eligible, U.S. or Canadian students must have at least 30 credit hours completed and not be scheduled to graduate before December 2007. Essays must be postmarked by Oct. 31, 2007.
