Veyance Technologies is closing its power transmission belt manufacturing plant in Owen Sound, Ontario, leaving 40 workers out of a job.
The former Goodyear belt facility was closed suddenly on Feb. 1, with workers being called to "an impromptu meeting late in the day Wednesday and told to go home, that the plant was closing and to return this morning for another meeting where severance details would be announced," according to a report by the Owen Sound Sun Times.
According to the USW, by contract Veyance has to give workers six months notice of closure, but apparently the two sides will negotiate a faster shutdown.
The facility made power transmission belts for automotive and industrial applications. That work, apparently, has been shifted to other Veyance plants in the U.S. and Mexico.
