A Yukon, Canada, judge has imposed $94,750 in fines on the individuals and companies involved in the 2011 death at a Whitehorse tire shop.
Denis Chabot was killed when servicing a North 60 Petro fuel truck in November 2011. Chabot had told his supervisors the truck was ready for pick up, but while performing one final check he was killed when the driver of the North 60 climbed into the running vehicle and backed up, according to reports. Chabot was crushed and later died from his injuries.
The judge found that Yukon Tire, North of 60 Petroleum and North of 60’s supervisor negligent in Chabot’s death.
The judge said he has set the fines so high so that companies couldn’t see the cost as simply doing business. The fines are also intended to motivate companies to prevent similar incidents. The money is in no way to put a price on the life that was lost, said the judge.
The judge directed nearly half the fines to be used to set up a safety-training program for other tire shop and trucking company employees.
