Titan Tire has asked back all the workers it has let go over the last five years at its Freeport, Ill., plant – and the tiremaker is still hiring more.
According to Kevin Kirk, United Steelworkers Local 745 president, the company has offered jobs to back to anyone who worked for Titan Tire at one time since 2006. About 40 people have decided to rejoin the company.
Although Titan has made it through its re-hire list, the tiremaker is not ready to look outside the company for workers yet. "There is a preferential hire list that goes back to when we were Goodyear. People who never worked for Titan but did work for Goodyear are on a preferential hire list. And there is currently about 61 people on that list," Kirk told local media.
Despite the increase in hires, plant workers are still without a union contract. Negotiations broke down at the end of December and employees have been working under Titan’s last offer, which was never approved. Kirk says they plan to try to get back to the bargaining table soon.
