Retreads Can’t Stop The Pain Of High Fuel Prices, But They Sure Can Help

Owner Operators and trucking fleets, in both the public and private sectors, are facing unprecedented operating cost increases, which are having a very severe negative effect on budgets.

Since tires are the second highest cost of operating any fleet, whether it’s a fleet of one or one thousand, the use of retreads can greatly help keep these costs way down. In fact, the use of retreads can often save a fleet as much as 50% less than the cost of comparable new tires. And this saving can be achieved without sacrificing safety, performance or handling.

Top quality retreads produced in modern retread plants will often actually outperform new tires with better mileage and comparable fuel efficiency as offered by the best new tires.

Retreaders are also able to offer application specific tread designs tailored specifically for your fleet’s particular operation, whether it is over the road, off the road, or a combination of both. There are over 100 application-specific tread designs available – something that no new truck tire manufacturer can offer. This means there is a specific tread design waiting for you, no matter what or where you haul.

All of the above is really true.

Yet we know that many truckers are still wary of using retreads because of a “bad experience” they may have had years ago.

The good news is that times have really changed, and for the better! Top quality retreads produced by top quality retreaders in modern retread plants using the latest technology (shearography, differometry (the science of digital mathematical measurement of surface topography using reflected laser light to record an image), X-ray and other non destructive testing methods to insure that casings are suitable for a next full life before being retreaded, have made a vast difference in the quality of today’s retreads. This is why top quality retreaders are able to have an adjustment rate for manufacturing defects as low, and often actually lower, than comparable new tires.

“The Wildpeak M/T tire wear was phenomenal over that rocky terrain even with a ton of wheel spin from running 2WD,” Sky Johnson said. “These are super tough tires, I was not nice to them and didn’t have a flat, and if there’s ever a race to get a bunch of flat tires, the Mint 400 is one of them.”
