John O'Groats to Land's End on Flat Tyres - Tire Review Magazine

John O’Groats to Land’s End on Flat Tyres

(Clacton, U.K./Tyres & Accessories) Goodyear has set eccentric British challenger Lloyd Scott, a new challenge – drive the length of the nation on flat tyres.

Scott, 48, from Essex, who has previously cycled across Australia on a Penny Farthing bicycle and completed this year’s London Marathon in a full suit of armour, has agreed to take the wheel throughout May for Goodyear’s RunOnFlat Rally.

The RunOnFlat Rally will see Lloyd drive the more than 1,600 miles in distance across the British Isles, from John O’Groats, where he started yesterday, to Land’s End in a Mini with flat tyres.

Not satisfied with the challenge of struggling across the U.K. in his specially decorated RunOnFlat Rally Mini with deflated tyres, Lloyd will also have to complete some ‘special stages’ during the Goodyear RunOnFlat Rally. These special stages include some of the most bendy, scary and narrow roads in Britain.

To add to the challenge, Lloyd will also be taking in some appropriately named places en route, including Flat, a town near Carlisle, Goodyear End on the A5, Runnon on the A386 near Okehampton in Devon and Aire Point in Cornwall.

Lloyd is taking part in the Goodyear RunOnFlat Rally to raise money for cancer charity, Children with Leukaemia. Anyone wishing to sponsor the Lloyd’s attempt to complete the RunOnFlat Rally can do so by visiting myrally.co.uk.

Scott comments: “I’ve taken on some incredibly quirky challenges over the years, but this has to be one of the oddest. When Goodyear approached me with the idea of driving the country on flat tyres, I knew they had found the right man.”

Community makes McMahon’s Best-One stand out from the competition. The company was founded in 1969 by Pat McMahon, who bought out a local independent tire dealer in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, with the help of Paul Zurcher.

Pat built a strong foundation for the business, and today, his son, Bubba, who grew up in the tire industry, now owns it with Randy Geyer, a longtime employee. Bubba’s wife, Kim, is now president of McMahon’s Best-One, and together they are pushing the limits on what it means to be an independent tire dealer.
