Bridgestone Americas’ Wilson, N.C., plant has earned the Underwriters Laboratories’ landfill waste diversion claim validation for Zero Waste to Landfill.
The Zero Waste to Landfill is the highest claim validation that the UL gives for landfill waste diversion. The validation is presented by UL Environment, a division of UL. The Bridgestone plant is the first facility of any kind to receive this validation.
“I am so proud of the teammates at the Wilson facility for their commitment to being the first of Bridgestone’s manufacturing sites, and the first manufacturing facility of any kind, to be recognized by UL Environment for this accomplishment,” said Gary Williamson, Wilson plant manager. “This achievement validates all of their hard work, and continues to position our company as a leader in identifying and implementing innovative solutions to support environmental sustainability.”
As part of the validation process, the plant underwent a two-part UL Environment-led audit that included documentation and onsite visits. The third party verified the plant’s Zero Waste to Landfill claim with a 14% waste to energy, determining the majority of the facility’s waste to energy diversion is the best possible for the material.
The tiremaker added a corporate recycling focus in 2006, and has progressed from nearly half of all its waste going to landfills than less than 15% today, it said.
