Pirelli Looking to Indian Makers to Help Shortage: Report

According to the Economic Times of India, Pirelli Tyre plans to source India-made tubeless tires due to capacity shortages at its manufacturing plants.

According to the newspaper, Pirelli is “in talks with Kolkata-based Birla Tyres and some other manufacturers for its global manufacturing requirements.”

Pirelli denied that it was taking that step. "’Pirelli is at present not evaluating any investment or any off take in India,’" the company told the Economic Times. "But people close to the development said Pirelli is looking at small quantities of quality tires from Indian manufacturers, with the aim to meet its commitment in the developed markets in Europe and the American continent."

"’The company is looking at options to source tires for overseas markets under its own brand provided Indian manufacturers confirm to its global quality standards,’" an unnamed "senior industry executive" told the newspaper. "’Pirelli was primarily looking for bigger-size tubeless tires for Europe and other developed markets.’"

According to the report, Pirelli sold technology to Birla Tyres in 1989, and that "common technology is the primary reason for Pirelli’s leaning towards Birla Tyres."
