Virginia Dealer Named Home Town Hero

Washington, D.C.-area tire dealer Matt Curry was honored as a "Home Town Hero" during the recent Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) award gala.
Matt Curry, President of Curry's Auto, with student entrepreneur Robby Lanier and Curry's son Matt Jr. at NFTE gala.
Curry, founder and president of Curry’s Auto Service, headquartered in Sterling, Va., was nominated for the award by NFTE board member John Hasenberg, senior vice president and financial advisor with the Hasenberg Hartsock Group of Morgan Stanley Smith Barney.

“When the criteria for the award were announced, it was obvious to me that Matt and Judy Curry were a fit,” Hasenberg said. “We were looking for someone who has grown up here and has given back to his community. We were looking for an honorable entrepreneur. Anyone who knows Matt knows that he really does care about the people around him.”

Curry was one of eight local entrepreneurs recognized by NFTE in its first awards program. A nonprofit that provides entrepreneurship education for at-risk high school students from low-income communities, NFTE is part of President Obama’s Startup America Partnership. The gala included a Youth Entrepreneurship Showcase, where 20 student entrepreneurs displayed and sold their products.

At the Showcase, Curry signed on to support three student entrepreneurs by purchasing the services from three of the young entrepreneurs.

Robby Lanier, CEO of Cloudride, will be designing original t-shirts for Curry’s annual Track Day Event on Sept. 25. Juan Bautista, CEO of Thermo Threads, is preparing 100 custom printed Curry’s logo t-shirts for the company’s 20Group event in June. Darius Davis, president of D & R Landscaping, will be providing landscaping services for Curry’s Reston/Great Falls location.

Curry’s Auto Service was founded in 1997, and today has seven locations in the Washington, D.C., area. The dealer was 2009 Tire Review Top Shop Award finalist.
