Truckers Trumped in TRIB Tire Thump

(Akron/Tire Review) TRIB’s tire thumping contest at the recent Great American Trucking Show in Dallas demonstrated that thumping a tire to determine how much air it contains is not the proper way to check air pressure.

TRIB and ArvinMeritor jointly sponsored a tire-thumping contest in the TRIB booth. Not one trucker who took the challenge was close to guessing the correct amount of air in the tire used during the contest.

“We had the tire inflated to 67 psi, and the closest guess was more than 80 pounds, once again proving that trying to determine how much air is in a tire by thumping it is the same as trying to determine if an engine needs oil by thumping the hood of a truck,” said Harvey Brodsky, TRIB’s managing director. “Most truckers we spoke to are now convinced that the only proper way to check air pressure is with a properly calibrated air gauge.”

TRIB held a similar contest at the Mid-America Trucking Show last March. Convinced TRIB had proved its point, Brodsky said “we will retire (no pun intended) our tire thumping contest at future trucking shows.”
