Auditors to Examine Tire Stewardship Spending

Following the Toronto Star’s article that outlined the Ontario Tire Stewardship’s excess spending on fancy meals, hotels and alcohol, auditors have been called to investigate the government-created organization, the newspaper reports.investigate

Auditors will be looking at the organization’s spending, contracts, plans for its $50-million surplus and the allegation that a former executive stole recycling fees, Michael Scott, CEO of Waste Diversion Ontario, told the Star.

Ontario’s two other recycling organizations will also be investigated at for electronics and household hazardous waste – with the tire stewardship being the main priority, Scott said.

Last week, the tire stewardship filed a lawsuit claiming its former chief financial officer Perminder Kandola and other unnamed individuals moved $346,565 in tire recycling fees from a tire importer to a bank account under “Ontario Tire.” The tire stewardship is currently working with authorities, according to tire stewardship executive director Andrew Horsman.
