John D. “Jack” McCarthy Sr., CEO of McCarthy Tire Service, died at the age of 79 after a short illness. He is remembered not only for his work in the industry, but his commitment to the community.John-Mccarthy-1422451199

McCarthy spent his entire life in the tire business, starting work for his father at the age of 12. He worked in various positions over the years before assuming the title of CEO. His work helped McCarthy’s grow into a multi-store location, with 43 locations across seven states.

While he spent his life in the tire business, he also contributed to the community through extensive volunteer service. McCarthy spent many years as a member of the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital, with 16 years as the board chairman. Additionally, he served on the board of Pennsylvania American Water Co. and was past chairman of the board of the Wilkes-Barre Housing Authority.

Other philanthropic efforts extended to King’s College, which dedicated the McCarthy Stadium in his name, and Bishop Hoban/Holy Redeemer High School, which dedicated its auditorium to him. He was also supportive of Misericordia University, the Catholic Youth Center and the American Heart Association.

McCarthy leaves behind his wife of nearly 56-years CeCe; daughters, Mary Ellen Horn and her husband Neil, and Kathleen Lambert and her husband Gary; son, John and his wife Lynn. He also leaves behind eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A visitation is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 30 from 3 to 7 p.m. in the Church of Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Catholic School Endowment Fund for the Diocese of Scranton, 300 Wyoming Ave, Scranton, PA 18503, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
