Tire Stud Ban Effort in Oregon Fails, Leader Plans 2013 Push

An Oregon voter referendum that would ban studded tires on state roads will not appear on the November ballot because not enough signatures were collected by the July 6 deadline.

One man’s drive to ban studded tires in Oregon has officially gone flat, the victim of a lack of funds.

The Oregonian newspaper reported on July 9 that Jeff Bernards, who has been trying to get a voter referendum on the November ballot that would ban studded tires on state roads, ended his campaign after he couldn’t collect enough signatures by the July 6 deadline.

“We had 150 volunteers who were getting 10, 20, 30 signatures from friends,” said Bernards. “But with without paid signature gatherers, you can’t get anything on the ballot in Oregon.”

In order to get the referendum on the state ballot, Bernards and his supporters needed to collect 80,000 signatures from registered voters. The newspaper reported that he had “gathered just over 10,000.”

Bernards still maintains that studded tires are causing millions of dollars in damage to Oregon roadways, and plans to take up the battle again with the 2013 state legislature.
