One June 20, the Washington State Department of Ecology urged adoption of the so-called "Better Brakes Law," regulations related to the physical composition of brake pads sold in the state.
The Better Brakes Law would phase out the use of substances like copper, asbestos and several heavy metals from both OE and aftermarket automotive brake pads.
If finally enacted, copper content would be reduced to 5% by 2021, and could be required to be reduced to 0.5% at a later date should the Department of Ecology find such action technically and economically feasible.
The Department of Ecology set public hearings for July 10 and July 12 to solicit further comments and feedback on the proposed regulations. Written comments also may be submitted to the Department of Ecology, but must be received by July 19.
