Regardless of whether you view ‘girlie calendars’ as art worthy of prolonged admiration or frown upon the exposure of bare flesh, there’s no denying the influence the Pirelli Calendar.
The ‘Cal’ to its friends, Pirelli’s annual has imparted certain levels of art and tastefulness upon the genre.
In Pirelli’s own words, the Cal is “the icon of Pirelli’s communication. A symbol that for over 40 years not only celebrates female beauty, but also celebrates the complexity of an art that has been able to transform itself over time.”
Yesterday, the 2010 edition of the famous wall adornment Pirelli’s 37th edition was launched in London. Shot in Brazil by American photographer Terry Richardson, the latest edition is a return to form for Pirelli, moving away from the high fashion or recent efforts and toward te more playful past of Pirelli’s previous calendars.
Eleven models appear in the Calendar: Catherine McNeil, Abbey Lee Kershaw and Miranda Kerr of Australia, Eniko Mihalik from Hungary, Marloes Horst of the Netherlands, Lily Cole, Daisy Lowe, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley from the U.K., Georgina Stojilijkovic of Serbia and two Brazilian natives, Gracie Carvalho and Ana Beatriz Barros.
