An employee of a Greenfield, Mass., tire shop has been charged with embezzling roughly $33,000 from his store.
According to local reports, the defendant worked as the assistant manager at Tire Warehouse from February to August 2013. During that time his duties included taking deposits, that the owner prepared, over to the bank. Allegedly the defendant would remove money for deposit and rewrite deposit slips, or fail to deposit money all together.
The theft came to light when the store’s owner received a call from the bank to discuss a discrepancy between a deposit slip and the cash. After going through the deposit slips, the storeowner noticed several of the deposits weren’t in his handwriting.
The storeowner confronted the defendant and he admitted to stealing roughly $4,000, but promised to pay it back. Tire Warehouse then hired an accountant to check the books for the period the defendant was employed. It was discovered more money was stolen, and the owner decided to pursue criminal charges.
