Data Highlights Michelin Energy’s Wet Braking and Fuel Efficiency

Michelin is promoting its wet-braking and fuel efficiency qualities following glowing research from independent test centre, T

Tests conducted by TÜV SÜD in April and May 2008 show that the new Michelin Energy Saver combines one of the shortest wet-road braking distances of any tyre in the market with the biggest fuel savings.

The braking tests were carried out by the German organisation using three different tyre sizes (195/60R15 H, 195/65R15 V and 205/55R16 V), which it purchased in tyre outlets. The comparative tests demonstrate that in challenging road conditions, such as on wet surfaces, the Michelin Energy Saver brakes in shorter or equal distances compared with six of its main, major-brand competitors (slowing from 80 km/h to 20 km/h).

According to the tests, Michelin Energy Saver is also the most fuel-efficient tyre on the market. According to TÜV SÜD, the Michelin Energy Saver reduces fuel consumption by 0.2 /100 km3 thanks to its rolling resistance, which is nearly 20% lower than that of its direct competitors. This means savings on the forecourt of around €125 euros (based on an average tyre life of 45,000 km and fuel costs of €1.40 euros per litre) over the average lifespan of the tyre.

A Michelin statement on the subject, pointed out that the French manufacturer allocates nearly €600 million euros a year to its research and development department. (Tyres & Accessories/Staffordshire, U.K.)
