Ike Closed Synthetic Plants, May Idle Goodyear Tire Plants

Reports say that Goodyear’s Topeka, Kan., tire plant will be shut down for a few days next week due to a raw materials shortage caused by Hurricane Ike.

The truck and OTR tire plant will be closed beginning Sept. 22, the report said.

Separate reports said that three of Goodyear’s synthetic rubber and chemical plants in the Houston area were shut down because of the hurricane.

"We’re still assessing the situation at these three chemical plants, as well as at our retail locations in the area,” said Goodyear spokesman Keith Price in published reports. “Like everyone else, we took the plants down before the hurricane hit.”??

It is unknown how much – if any – damage the petrochemical facilities suffered or how long they might remain closed. Nor is it known if any other Goodyear tire plants will be affected. (Tire Review/Akron)
