When Matt and Judy Curry opened Curry’s Auto Service in 1998, the couple knew they were taking a risk. With one child at home and another on the way, the Currys opened their shop in Chantilly, Va., with 13 credit cards and $103,000 worth of debt. “Every last penny to our name was in this

Top Shop Honorees Share More Keys to Success

I have written this column for several years now, many times discussing various aspects of performance, whether it is tires, wheels or suspensions. Looking Long Term: Kanwar Has Apollo Tyre Focused…and on the Move

When Onkar Kanwar took over Apollo Tyres Ltd. In 1980, the company was a huge mess. The last of the major tiremakers has a new contract with the United Steelworkers. Union workers at Bridgestone Americas’ tire plants ratified a new four-year master contract with the tiremaker Saturday, brining the 2009 master co tract negotiations to a quiet end. Michelin Sweeps Consumer Reports A/S, Winter Tests

Michelin swept the top spots in all four categories of Consumer Reports’ annual test of all-season and winter tires. Presented in CR’s November 2009 issue, the independent testing considers a range of performance characteristics, including dry braking, wet braking, handling, hydroplaning resistance, snow traction, ice braking, ride comfort, road noise, rolling resistance and tread life.

Unfortunate Passing

I’m not quite old enough to have to rely on the obituaries to track friends or my own condition. But it is odd to read an obituary for a tire business. This one ran in the Bradenton, Fla., Herald last week. There it was at the top of the business briefs in last Thursday’s Herald.

It’s Right at the Intersection of We Love Dealers Alley

Goodyear chief Bob Keegan, speaking at the recent Tire Science and Technology Conference in Akron, revealed that the tiremaker has changed the name of its technical centers in Akron and Luxembourg. They are now called Goodyear Innovation Centers, in keeping, Keegan said, with Goodyear’s drive to be an innovation leader in the global tire industry.
