On May 24, USTMA testified at a hearing concerning a federal investigation of the potential national security implications of steel imports (called a Section 232 investigation). The U.S. Commerce Department is expected to make a decision this month.
Commerce Secretary, Wilbur Ross, said that the decision will be “bold action.” USTMA is concerned that blanket restrictions on steel imports could negatively affect U.S. tire manufacturing due to inadequate domestic supply of high-quality steel used in tires.
The New Jersey Senate has scheduled a vote on USTMA-supported unsafe used tire legislation for the afternoon of July 22.
