Union, CTNA Talks End: Plant Cuts Still Planned

(Akron/Tire Review) The Charlotte Observer reported Feb. 4 that Continental Tire North America (CTNA) will proceed with cutting more than half of the workforce at its Charlotte tire plant after talks with the United Steelworkers (USW) failed.

CTNA has said that it would cut some 500 jobs at the plant if the USW did not agree to taking a 35% wage and benefit reduction, cuts that would have saved the tiremaker some $32 million, according to the company.

CTNA said the USW did offer some concessions, but “they fell far short” of the cuts the company feels are necessary to maintain full production at the facility.
