Toyo Falsifies Performance Data

On Oct. 14, Toyo Tire & Rubber Co. said it failed to test or faked performance test results for more than 87,000 vibration-absorbing rubber products for the shipbuilding and train manufacturing industries, according to the Asahi Shimbum.

This admission comes just months following a rubber bearing scandal at the company.

Apologizing at a news conference was Yasushi Takagi, a senior corporate officer of Toyo Tire & Rubber.

“In addition to the scandal of vibration-absorbing rubber products for buildings, we again caused concern,” Takagi said. “We are taking the matter seriously.”

Toyo said it found the latest problems when it was studying the products it manufactured over the past ten years, the paper reported. The rubber products in question were used in window frames and engine bases to absorb vibrations and heighten passenger comfort.

The transport ministry said the rubber products would not have a direct effect on safety, so emergency checks are not necessary, according to Asahi Shimbum.

Following its earthquake rubber bearing scandal Toyo rearranged its leadership structure.
