Things Looking Up, Says MNA Chief

While no one is completely out of the woods yet, Michelin North America weather the recession storm and has emerged "stronger than when we went in," according to its chairman and president.

Dick Wilkerson made that remark in a recent story in the Greenville News.

A run-down of MNA operations shows that 2009 sales to North American customers amounted to $7 billion in 2009, a hefty chunk of Groupe Michelin’s $20.4 billion global sales during the year.

MNA employed 16,640 staff in North America, 3,550 in Canada and 710 in Mexico. During 2009, Michelin operated 18 plants in 16 locations.

Wilkerson told the newspaper that MNA "ended up, frankly, doing much better than we ever imagined we would do" and emerged from the recession "stronger than we went in." And now, MNA is hiring again at most of its South Carolina plants.
