The Wheels on the Truck Industry Go Round and Round

Sorry I’ve been away for a while. Spent last week down in Louisville (one of my favorite towns) at the giant Mid-America Trucking Show. We were the only tire magazine in attendance, and got to spend some quality time visiting with the nearly a dozen tiremakers exhibiting at the event.

MATS rebounded quite nicely from a down 2009 event, and show organizers said the 39th annual show – the nation’s biggest and most important trucking industry convention and trade show – played host to nearly 1,000 exhibitors and more than 70,000 trucking professionals – fleet managers, OEMs and drivers.

Attendees came from all 50 states and 59 countries, organizers said.

"We are extremely pleased with the results of our efforts and with the outstanding attendee turnout. We could not have asked for a more positive atmosphere for the trucking industry or scripted a better turnaround for our show," said Toby Young, president of show organizer EMA. "Given our performance in 2010 and conversations with current, returning, and future exhibitors, we feel that MATS 2011 will be even better. As we continue to make improvements to the show, add value to exhibiting, and offer more opportunities at the premier face-to-face marketing event in trucking, we know that next year’s 40th anniversary will be one of our best expositions, once again raising the bar for the greatest show in trucking."

Not only does MATS attract a huge crowd of truck industry companies and attendees, there is no lack of celebrity around the massive Kentucky Exposition Center. John Anderson, Richard Petty, Sammy Kershaw, Lonestar, Suzy Bogguss, The Grascals, Aaron Tippin, Sammy Kershaw and Ice Road Truckers star Alex Debogorski all made appearances during the three-day event.

And there was a truck beauty show, a Big Rig Build-Off, free concerts, ride-n-drives, educational seminars, banquets and press conferences aplenty.

Just before the 39th edition opened, show organizers announced a new 10-year deal that will keep MATS in Louisville through 2020.

It was a busy week, to say the least, and by and large the tire company exhibitors I spoke to were happy participants. A lot of business got done, which is always a plus for exhibitors and attendees alike.
